Kerala Rice and Curries – A Taste of Home for Every Malayali in the UK

For every Malayali, a plate of steaming hot Kerala matta rice served with a variety of aromatic curries is more than just food – it’s a connection to home, heritage, and the slow, comforting pace of Kerala life. Whether it’s the fiery heat of a nadan fish curry, the creamy richness of avial, or the tangy depth of moru curry, these dishes are meant to be enjoyed with rice that is just as special.

The Heart of the Meal – Kerala Matta Rice Kerala matta rice, also known as rose matta or palakkadan matta, is known for its earthy flavour, reddish hue, and slightly chewy texture. Unlike white rice, it is rich in fibre and nutrients, making it both wholesome and satisfying. Pair it with a spicy beef ularthiyathu or a comforting parippu curry, and you have a traditional Kerala meal that fills the belly and the soul.

Curries That Complete the Feast A Malayali lunch plate is incomplete without a medley of curries. Sambar, with its mix of vegetables and lentils, is a staple. The coconut-infused theeyal adds depth, while a tangy meen curry cuts through the richness. Vegetarians can indulge in thoran, olan, and pachadi, each adding variety and colour to the spread.
